(12/15) ………………… ● name-calling People are resort to name-calling when they can’t win the argument on merit. 「人は、実力で議論に勝てないとき、誹謗中傷するものよ」 〈解説〉 テスラ創業者の Elon Musk が、『TIME』誌の2021 Person of the Year 「今年の人（＝その年に良くも悪くも、最も影響力を与えた人）」に選ばれました。 それが気に入らなかったアメリカ上院議員の Elizabeth Warren。Twitter上で、彼をこのように非難しました。 Let’s change the rigged tax code so The Person of the Year will actually pay taxes and stop freeloading off everyone else. 「The Person of the Year が実際に税金を払い、他人にたかるのをやめさせるよう、不正な税制を変えましょう」 rigged は「不正に操作された」、tax code は「税法」、freeload off は「他人にたかる」。ちなみに、Joy が freeloader という語を使っていました。「たかり屋」「居候」という意味です。 それに対し、Elon Muskも、Native American の血を引くことを利用しているなどと、Elizabeth Warren を personal attack「個人攻撃」。Joyは、He attacked her personally.と言っていました。 personal attack とは、他人の主張・発言を検証する際に、根拠を示さず罵倒することです。 このようなやり取りを、Sara が People are resort to name-calling when they can’t win the argument on merit.と表現しました。 name-calling は、「悪口」「誹謗中傷」という意味。
